What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a very effective, modern talking therapy. What I love about it is that it focuses on positivity and finding solutions, as the name implies.
It works on the belief that each client already has the necessary tools to overcome their difficulty. The hypnotherapist’s role is to help the client find those tools and inner strengths. We do this by accessing the subconscious mind through hypnosis.
Just to be clear, hypnosis is not like stage hypnotism which is purely for entertainment. You will always be fully in control and I won’t ask you to do anything except get comfortable and relax!
Neuroscience is at the heart of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy. We talk about the Intellectual Brain and the Primitive Brain quite a bit because this helps clients understand why they feel the way they do. For example, we know from neuroscience that repeatedly talking, or even thinking, about your past or your problems can, unfortunately, make you feel worse.
This is because your mind can’t tell the difference between imagination and reality. So every time you remember a negative event, you experience those negative feelings all over again. We want to avoid that, so in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy we talk mostly about the present and the future. You think about and imagine the changes you want to make. And what life could look like for you going forward, one small step at a time.
We also talk about the importance of positive neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, important when you’re dealing with ADHD.
In our sessions, you’ll tell me what’s been good since we last met. Occasionally, this can be hard for some people, but even having a really nice cup of tea would count! Then we’ll talk about what changes you want to make going forward. Lastly, we get to the hypnosis, or trance, which is when you get to lie back, relax and forget about everything. It’s that added extra that really helps those changes happen.
